Muttontown Today

The Village coordinates its activities with the governmental agencies in nearby Villages and cooperates with the authorities of the State, County, Town and special districts.

  • The Village receives revenues from the State in the form of mortgage tax, State aid and grants.
  • The Village is its own assessing unit and assesses properties as of January 1Ā annually.
  • Village taxes cover all services rendered by the Village, including police protection, maintenance of public roads, snow plowing of public roads, safety inspections of properties, zoning and other local laws, board of appeals, planning board and site and architectural review board.

 

Location

Muttontown is in the Town of Oyster Bay. It is a residential community encompassing 4,530 acres in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The Villageā€™s chief access roads are Route 106 and Route 25A.

Statistics

The Village is comprised of approximately 1,200 homes, consisting of approximately 3,650 residents as of 2019 US Census data.

Geography

The amount of land area in Muttontown is 6.1 square miles. The area is mostly residential and also includes hundreds of miles of hiking and horse trails. View the zoning map here.

Village Services

Muttontown Police Department: Muttontown has its own Police department. PLEASE CALL 911 IN ORDER TO REACH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE DISPATCHER WILL CONNECT YOU. The MPD number is for non-essential messages and is checked periodically.

Local Services

School Districts: There are four school districts in the village: Jericho, Syosset, Oyster Bay/East Norwich and Locust Valley.

Fire Districts: There are three fire districts: Jericho, Syosset and East Norwich. Residents who reside in the East Norwich Fire district are billed separately on their tax bill for the services provided.

Water: Jericho Water District provides water to the district.

Roads: Most main roads are State and County Roads. There are a number of private roads where residents are responsible for snow removal services or road repair. Some communities have HOAs (Home Owner Associations) which collect dues in order to maintain services for their private roads.

Trash Removal/Licensed Carters: Trash Removal is provided by private companies that the residents arrange.
